Here are some of the flies I love

To me there is no better way to improve my fishing ability than by creating, tweaking and improving all my tackle. Fly tying began out of necessity but has grown into a life of its own. I have learned from some of the best and I try to pass on what I know to others. Once you start, it’s tough to stop.

Some Flies That I Have Designed

The Whiting Farms American hackle is offered in capes and saddles come in many colors and different grades, so try some variations of this pattern on your next trip.  Your local fly shop can assist you in obtaining these fine capes in the many colors and grades available.

My Islamorado bonefish fly

bonfish flyThere’s bonefish fishing and then there is Islamorada bonefish fishing. The two are not synonymous and what works for bonefish fishing will only get your feelings hurt in Islamorada. For this reason I tied this fly and I call this pattern “Islamorada thing”. It really looks like nothing in nature but many at the same time. With a crab/shrimp appeal it gets the job done. Here is how I tie it:

  • Hook - Gamakatsu SS15 in number 8 size
  • Thread - Gudebrod size G in white
  • Tail - American Rooster Cape in Grizzly
  • Body – Chenille with Grizzly hackle
  • Wing   - Olive marabou
  • Eyes – Medium bead chain
Tarpon hen circle fly

Tarpon Hen CircleTarpon fishing is a game of odds. Sometimes the odds are in your favor and you catch one of the one that bite but most of the time they throw the hook and move on. I use circle hooks and fish that tarpon cannot throw them as easy. Here is how I tie it:

  • Hook - Eagle Claw L7033SSU hook in 2/0 size
  • Thread - Gudebrod size G in white
  • Tail – Chartruese rabbit strip & Silver flash & American Hen Cape in Yellow laced Black
  • Body – Thread and 5-Minute epoxy over the eyes
  • Eyes – Red with Black spot 3D eyes in 2.5 mm

Tarpon red eye furnace fly

Bass fishing popper

Bass popperBass fishing with poppers is the best! There is nothing like watching a fish engulf a popper that has ventured to close to their lair. For me poppers should be simple and easy to tie. The American Hen cape gives a profile and image that few fish have seen, therefore I highly recommend it. Here is how I tie it:

  • Hook - Mustad 37187 Stinger hook in 1/0 size
  • Thread - Gudebrod size G in white
  • Tail - American Hen Cape in Yellow laced Black & Silver flash
  • Body – American Rooster Cape in Yellow & Perfect Popper #1
  • Eyes – Chartreuse with Black spot in 2.5 mm
Dalhberg diver

Dalhberg diverGar fishing can be a frustrating endeavor. With poor eye sight and a bad temper they can be tough to catch. This fly is a Dalberg diver that has a long Schalapen tail and a very uneven head shape (this causes the fly top dive at strange angles). I find noise and water disturbance help to trigger more strikes. Here is how I tie it:

  • Hook - Mustad 37187 Stinger hook in 4/0 size
  • Thread - Gudebrod size G in white
  • Tail – Schalapen in Chartruese & Silver flash
  • Body – Chartreuse deer hair
  • Weed guard – 40-pound Stren monofilament

My fly tying bench

fly tying benchMy fly tying tools are the best and worse part of the game. The sky is the limit and I can nver have enough. I use a desk I bought from Target and use plastic bins to store my tying supplies in. My flytying bench is the right heigth and is comfortable for me to use.
