Periodic cleaning should include disassembling the bolt

Remington 541 and 700 rifles are bolt actions and the bolt should be removed and cleaned. The bolt can accumulate dirt, powder and other debris that can cause a malfunction that could cost you more than just your trophy fees. Below is how you can disassemble your rifle bolt.

Here's How I Do It

Step 1: Unscrew the Remington 541 bolt screw. Using a flat screwdriver pry up the metal tag (the red arrow shows where to pry the tab up) and twist the bolt nut toward the bolt handle. Continue until the bolt nut comes out completely.
Step 2: The Remington 541 disassembled bolt. The bolt comes apart into three pieces. These are now ready for a thorough cleaning. Once clean and dry lubricate with a high quality oil and reassemble in the reverse order.
Step 3: Unscrew the Remington 700 bolt screw. Using a flat screwdriver pry up the metal tag (the red arrow shows where to pry the tab up)and twist the bolt nut toward the bolt handle. Continue until the bolt nut comes out completely.
Step 4: The Remington 700 disassembled bolt. The bolt comes apart into two pieces. These are now ready for a thorough cleaning. Once clean and dry lubricate with a high quality oil and reassemble in the reverse order.
